Founded by the writer and politician Víctor Balaguer in 1884, the Víctor Balaguer Library Museum was conceived as a multifunctional institution that integrated library, newspaper library, museum and educational services.

Its collection comprises the artefacts amassed by its founder over the course of his career, during which he held various positions, including that of Minister of Overseas. In addition to paintings and an exhibition of decorative arts, the museum has a collection of ethnographic objects from the Philippines, Egypt, China, and Japan.

Since its inauguration in 1884, the BMVB began to publish the Butlletí de la Biblioteca Museu Balaguer, which reported on new bibliographical and artistic acquisitions and published articles related to the collections. Supervised personally by Víctor Balaguer, the bulletin accurately documented the donations and praised the donors, thereby making it an essential source for identifying the provenance of the museum’s objects.
