Intercultural Dialogue Tables

(Tr)african(t)s has the key participation of communities from former Spanish colonies and the African and Filipino diasporas in Catalonia. The Intercultural Dialogue Tables promote reflection on colonial heritage in museums, enriching critical analysis and identifying relevant interventions on the colonial experience and the migratory phenomenon.

(Tr)african(t)s could not be carried out without the involvement of the populations of the former Spanish colonies or the diasporic African and Filipino communities in Catalonia. Being aware of the limitations of the working team—mainly made up of non-racialized people from the university environment—the project contemplates several mechanisms to favour the participation of people who reside in, come from, or are descendants from the former colonies.
One fundamental participation mechanism is the Intercultural Dialogue Tables, whose purpose is to generate a space for reflection and discussion with the diasporic communities about the heritage preserved in the museums and centres that are the object of the intervention. These tables encourage conversation around the collections and objects through the technique of photo-elicitation, using graphic materials and documents from the archives of the respective museums under investigation.
The results and testimonies collected in the IDTs allow the most significant interventions to be identified on the relationship between the colonial experience, heritage plundering, and migration. This, in turn, enriches the critical analysis of heritage of colonial origin.
