Pieces

This collection of the Museum of Ethnology and World Cultures (MuEC) brings together several deposits from collectors linked to the Spanish colonial administration in the Philippines. It includes artefacts from the Igorot peoples of northern Luzon, such as spears, bolos (machetes), shields, liturgical figures, smoking pipes, battle-axes, and models of Philippine houses and buildings.

Origin

Most of the collection came from a deposit made by a political-military commander, and part of was brought to the Peninsula for display at the General Exhibition of the Philippine Islands in Madrid in 1887. The history of these pieces is linked to the colonial dynamics of domination, plunder, and segregation.
