Donated by Francesc Darder himself, this collection, which currently comprises 1,568 items, formed the initial nucleus of the museum (1916). It consists mainly of animal specimens—some of which came from the Barcelona Zoo, of which Darder was the first director—and a few ethnological objects, of particular note are two domestic buffaloes or carabaos (Bubalus bubalis), originally from the Philippines and stuffed by Darder in 1888. One of them is on display at the museum, while only the skeleton of the other remains. Also on display are a lion, a chimpanzee, and several monkeys.

The collection also includes ninety authentic human skulls and three mummies (one Egyptian, one Peruvian, and one Mexican).
